I look forward to teaching my 5 year old grandson to read. I taught 4th grade and GED Basic Skills years ago, so I want to refresh my skills and learn what new methods have been developed since my retirement.
My grandson is 4 so he needs to learn a couple of things in preparation for reading. My area was Secondary School Math, grades 7 to 12, so I have a lot to learn so I can help him.
If he knows his letters and most of his sounds, I would start with phonemic awareness activities first. Make sure you watch this training in the membership. These are the things I’m doing with my four year old right now, starting with phoneme isolation: https://membership.themeasuredmom.com/courses/how-to-teach-phonemic-awareness/
If the first three stages are pretty easy for him, he’s ready to start reading CVC words. Let me know how it goes!
